What is digital onboarding and how does it work?

Today, critical operations carried out remotely, such as opening a bank account or signing an insurance contract, are increasingly numerous and digital onboarding procedures are a valid tool to combat identity theft and verify the data of a potential customer interested in purchasing a product or activating a service.

What is digital onboarding? This is the set of initiatives that allow companies and institutions to improve the acquisition of new customers through a completely digitised process that does not require the physical presence of the individuals involved and allows user data to be verified through an easy, secure and reliable identity identification and certification system.

The digitalisation of onboarding processes, which literally means “getting on board”, is well known in the Human Resources (HR) sector, where it is called corporate onboarding, but it is also widely spread in other areas, such as the B2C (Business to Consumer) and B2B (Business to Business) sectors, and more generally in any field in which an organisation needs to insert an individual in its structure as an employee or customer.

Digital onboarding in corporate banking, in particular, has marked the transition from the traditional On-Site onboarding method  (the customer goes to the offices of his bank and identity verification takes place through a valid identification document) to digital onboarding that exploits cutting-edge technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence and biometric recognition to automate data collection activities and simplify data management and updating within banking systems, reducing the margin of error and improving customer experience.

There are several solutions that are based on Artificial Intelligence and allow for identity verification of a user remotely such as liveness detection and face match.

What is it all about?  Liveness detection in biometrics is the ability of a system to detect whether the face, fingerprint or other biometric traits are real or artefacts. The verification of liveness is simple: when the user turns on the webcam of the digital device he chooses to use, the face match algorithm, or facial recognition technology, compares the frames of the video with the photo on the identity document previously uploaded, checked and validated through document verification systems, and verify that the two images belong to the same person. This method gives certainty that the user who is performing the operation is a real person and not a bot.

Once the authenticity and consistency of the data provided by the user have been verified, additional documents can be requested, if necessary, before signing the contract with a digital signature and thus concluding the customer onboarding process.

Digital onboarding and SPID: how to activate digital identity with Namirial?

Article 27 of Legislative Decree no. 76 of 16 July 2020, the so-called Decreto Semplificazioni (Simplification Decree), encourages the use of SPID as a secure tool for authenticating and identifying users.

Digital identity streamlines recognition procedures and improves security: with SPID it is no longer necessary to attach an identification document to verify users’ data and it is possible to sign a contract remotely anywhere and at any time.

With Namirial, an accredited Identity Provider for the release of digital identity, you can obtain SPID credentials easily, quickly and in no time.

Namirial ID is a set of credentials -username, password and optional OTP- generated by Namirial that correspond to the digital identity of a user and are used to access the services of Public Administrations and private individuals who adhere to the Public Digital Identity System.

Here are the features and costs of the packages offered by Namirial:

  • Personal SPID: activate Personal SPID for free using CIE/CNS with PIN and smart card reader or a digital signature certificate;
  • Personal SPID with Video Identification: activate SPID any time, 24/7, even on Saturday and Sunday. All you need is an internet connection, your smartphone or webcam, an identification document and your tessera sanitaria (Italian health card). The cost of the video-identification service is € 19.90 + VAT (only once).

In addition, with Namirial it is also possible to activate the Professional SPID, a particular type (Type 3) of Public Digital Identity System designed to allow professionals and companies to access the services of the Public Administration and private bodies that adhere to the circuit.

The Professional SPID, in addition to the data of the Personal SPID (Type 1), contains additional attributes that characterise the profession of the person who owns it and has a duration of one or two years from activation, depending on the number of years you choose to purchase. Upon expiration, if the user decides not to renew it, SPID Professional will return to being a Personal SPID Type 1. The annual price for a Namirial Professional SPID is 35.00 euros, while for two years the price is € 70.00 + VAT.

This service can be purchased both by those who already have a Namirial Personal SPID and by those who don’t, or have a SPID issued by another Identity Provider: in all cases the activation procedure allows the user to activate their Professional SPID (Video Identification included in the price) or to update a Personal SPID previously activated with Namirial.
